Radiology Services Offered at Radiology and Imaging Specialists in Lakeland, Florida

There are many aspects to the radiology medical specialty, including both diagnosis and treatment. But the one thing that every radiology service has in common is the use of medical imaging.

In diagnostic imaging, various “modalities” like X-ray, CT, MRI and ultrasound are used to evaluate and diagnose various health conditions. The type of imaging your doctor recommends will depend on the specific condition being evaluated. For example, X-ray may be sufficient to diagnose a broken bone. But if your doctor suspects a soft tissue injury within a joint like the knee or shoulder, a more advanced imaging test such as MRI may be recommended because it provides greater detail.

In breast imaging, tests like mammography are initially used preventively as a way to achieve early detection of breast cancer. For women at high risk for breast cancer, a supplemental screening test such as automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) may be recommended. Should cancer be detected by one of these tests, imaging such as breast MRI may be used to help with treatment planning and monitoring its effectiveness.

With interventional radiology, imaging is used to guide minimally invasive treatments from inside the body, quickly and effectively treating diseases and health conditions that once required open surgery and a long recovery. Conditions such as vascular disease, liver cancer, knee osteoarthritis, spine fractures, uterine fibroids, pelvic congestion, varicoceles, chronic hemorrhoids and more can be treated less invasively and in an outpatient setting.
